Jane allows elders to stay home longer
Jane helps elderly people living alone who wish to stay longer in the comfort of their own homes. For their comfort, but also their families’. Through the use of IoT technology, combined with Artificial Intelligence, Jane has developed a solution to help the elderly stay at home longer while never being really alone. Even if you can’t go by every day, the app will tell you if everything is OK and whether you need to take action.
In the summer of 2019, we got attracted by Belfius Insurance to build & launch the venture ‘Jane’, a smart IoT solution that helps elderly people to stay longer in the comfort of their own homes. An existing MVP was already being tested but did not meet customer needs & had, from a technical point of view, limited scaling potential.
The technical challenge was to build a stable and reliable IoT solution based on motion sensors and emergency buttons that could communicate real-time to a cloud-based infrastructure, perform machine learning algorithms to detect anomalies and hazardous situations, and inform members of the care circle (children, health care professionals, etc) through a mobile application. As we have worked with Faktion in the past and they are well known for their leading position related to data science and machine learning solutions, we did not hesitate to work with them again.
In a few days' time, Faktion performed an in-depth technical due diligence, focussing on the maturity & robustness of the existing MVP, the development workflow, and the technical capabilities of the existing team. Based on those results and the ambition level and quality expectations set forth by Belfius Insurance we decided to, from a technical point of view, us a plain-vanilla approach.
In less than two months' time, the team of developers and data scientists at Faktion built, from the ground up, a working MVP that could be tested by 50+ actual users. They designed a new, scalable architecture, implemented a new data science algorithm, and set strong foundations for the mobile application. Faktion also created a qualitative development workflow including detailed documentation that we could continue to use after the clean and swift handover to the internal development team. In addition, Faktion gave a detailed overview of potential next steps to further improve all aspects of the solution (architecture, frontend, data science, etc.), including some ideas to increase the value of the product.
